Internal Medicine / Medical Genetics & Genomics Policies

Internal Medicine / Medical Genetics Policy Overview

The American Board Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) are pleased to announce the approval of a four-year combined training program in Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics & Genomics, leading to dual board eligibility. This will replace the five-year combined program.

Both Boards recognize the need to increase the number of trainees in Medical Genetics and Genomics and decreasing the training time has been identified as one important step in attracting more residents. In this regard, the combined residency training in Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics & Genomics will now be comparable to other combined programs. Shortening training in no way lessens the importance the Boards place on research and training of physician-scientists, and we continue to encourage residents to continue their training in investigative or academic pursuits in order to prepare for careers in research and academics.
