Options for Earning Points

You must complete a minimum of 20 practice performance points to maintain your certification.

ABIM PIMs Practice Improvement Modules® are Web-based tools that guide physicians through a review of patient data and support the implementation of and/or reporting on a quality-improvement (QI) plan for their practice.

Use our practice performance selector tool to help you choose the best option for you or review options for earning points based on your professional setting or interest:

Work in an out-patient setting

Condition-specific PIMs (e.g., Diabetes, Hypertension) include a data-collection tool, which helps physicians collect clinical data about their patients. Some of these PIMs also include patient surveys.

If you don’t need a data collection tool, use the Self-Directed or Completed Project PIM.

Work in an in-patient setting

The Self-Directed and Completed Project PIMs can be completed by hospitalists and other physicians working in an in-patient setting. Measures related to specific conditions are available, as well as ones related to patient safety, utilization of services and other in-patient concerns.

If you are beginning a new QI project, use the Self-Directed PIM.

If you are reporting on QI activities that have already taken place, use the Completed Project PIM.

Access to aggregate quality data

The Self-Directed PIM and the Completed Project PIM allow physicians to report on their quality-improvement work. Both of these modules utilize the ABIM Measures Library, in conjunction with performance data from your institution, health plan or other external sources (e.g., The Joint Commission).

If you are beginning a new QI project, use the Self-Directed PIM.

If you are reporting on QI activities that have already taken place, use the Completed Project PIM.

Supervise residents and/or fellows

The Clinical Supervision PIM was created for faculty to evaluate their competency and performance in practice, provide feedback on their supervisory skills and get their residents involved in quality improvement. View Demo.

Clinically inactive

The Essentials of Quality Improvement (EQI) module offers clinically inactive physicians a way to complete a quality improvement activity through the assessment of their knowledge of current quality improvement principles.
