Clarence H. Braddock, III, MD, MPH Elected to the American Board of Internal Medicine Board of Directors

Philadelphia, PA, July 1, 2008 – Clarence H. Braddock, III, MD, MPH, Associate Dean for Medical Education and Medical Director for Quality at Stanford University School of Medicine, has been elected to the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Board of Directors. ABIM sets the standards and certifies physicians practicing in internal medicine and its subspecialties who possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide high quality care.

The Board of Directors, composed of physicians board certified in internal medicine and one of its subspecialties, guides ABIM's overall mission and direction as it works to improve health care quality. All ABIM Directors participate in ABIM's Maintenance of Certification program, which promotes ongoing learning and in which doctors demonstrate their commitment to the Board’s standards.

"Clarence's expertise in quality of care and medical ethics makes him a perfect addition to our Board, and his input will be invaluable to our efforts to improve health care quality," said Christine Cassel, MD, ABIM's president and CEO.

Dr. Braddock is recognized as a national expert on informed decision making and doctor-patient communication, having given numerous invited lectures on informed decision making, as well as workshops at national meetings. He developed an assessment scale of the quality of informed decision making in clinical practice, using it to show that rarely involve patients in routine yet important clinical decisions. Results of this work have been published in Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Journal of General Internal Medicine, Journal of Clinical Ethics, and the American Journal of Medicine, as well as book chapters on informed consent. In 2006, Dr. Braddock was awarded the Stanford Medical School Department of Medicine David A. Rytand Award for Clinical Teaching.

Dr. Braddock is also an active leader in bioethics and ethics education. During his tenure as Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Dr. Braddock was Director of the Bioethics Education Project, an initiative to expand and integrate more ethics education into the curriculum. Several of these innovations have been published in journals such as Academic Medicine and presented at national meetings. He recently chaired a task force of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities to establish curricular standards for medical schools. He chairs the Ethics Committee for the Society of General Internal Medicine, and is a member of the American College of Physicians’ Ethics, Professionalism, and Human Rights Committee.

Dr. Braddock received his medical degree from University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine.
