ABIM Elects Harlan M. Krumholz, MD, SM to Board of Directors

Philadelphia, PA, July 1, 2010 – Harlan M. Krumholz, MD, SM, the Harold H. Hines, Jr. Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University School of Medicine, has been elected to the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Board of Directors. ABIM sets the standards and certifies physicians practicing in internal medicine and its subspecialties who possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide high quality care.

The Board of Directors, composed of physicians who are board certified in internal medicine or one of its subspecialties, guides ABIM's overall mission and direction as it works to improve health care quality. All ABIM Directors participate in ABIM's Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. MOC recognizes that what was standard treatment a decade ago may have changed and that the public needs a process to know if their physicians have kept up to date in their field. Dr. Krumholz is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease.

“Harlan is a renowned cardiovascular researcher and clinician, with a clear understanding of the resource management issues facing today's physicians. His cutting-edge work examining clinical decisions in the context of finite resources, and developing quality improvement programs for cardiologists, will provide important insight to this Board,” said Christine Cassel, MD, ABIM's President and CEO.

Dr. Krumholz is Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at Yale University School of Medicine. He leads numerous national initiatives, including the development of publicly reported outcomes measures for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Hospital to Home (H2H) Initiative to reduce readmissions of the American College of Cardiology and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. He led the Door-to-Balloon Alliance, a successful national campaign to reduce delays in treating patients with heart attacks. He is editor of Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the American College of Cardiology. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine and is an American Heart Association Distinguished Scientist. Dr. Krumholz's research focuses on determining optimal clinical strategies and identifying opportunities for improvement in the prevention, treatment and outcome of cardiovascular disease with emphasis on under-represented populations.

A graduate of Yale College, Dr. Krumholz completed his medical degree at Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency and chief residency at the University of California at San Francisco and a fellowship in cardiology at Beth Israel Hospital of Harvard Medical School. During his fellowship, he earned a Master of Health Policy and Management from Harvard's School of Public Health.
