ABIM Appoints Dr. Eric Holmboe As VP For Evaluation Research

Philadelphia, PA, April 22, 2004 – The American Board of Internal Medicine announced the appointment of Eric Holmboe, MD as Vice President for Evaluation Research; the appointment will be effective August 1. Christine Cassel, MD, President of the ABIM said, "Eric brings an impressive range of skills and experience in medical education, evaluation, and research. As the ABIM moves into more complex methods for evaluating internists, Eric's leadership will serve us well, particularly the challenge of embedding quality improvement into our traditional evaluation measures."

Dr. Holmboe will lead the ABIM's section on Clinical Performance Services and oversee the Board's research related to evaluating the ongoing education of physicians in internal medicine and its subspecialties.

Prior to joining ABIM, Dr. Holmboe was an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine, where he also served an Assistant Director of the School's prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars program and directed the School's Clinical Assessment and the Department of Medicine's Faculty Development and Evaluation programs. In past years, Dr. Holmboe was an associate director of internal medicine training programs at Yale and the Portsmouth Naval Hospital.

Dr. Holmboe has combined an active career in academic medicine and the U.S. Navy. A prolific writer and presenter, his research has focused on improving methods for educating and evaluating medical residents and physicians, promoting faculty development, and investigating methods to enhance the quality of care that physicians provide.

In addition to being certified in internal medicine, Dr. Holmboe is a Fellow of the ACP and a member of the Society for General Internal Medicine and many other national medical organizations. He also serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed publications, including the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology and Journal of General Internal Medicine. He was instrumental in the ABIM's Mini-CEX Project and participated on the project to standardize data collection for internal medicine trainees.

Dr. Holmboe graduated Magna Cum Laude from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA and with honors from the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He completed residency training in internal medicine at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, MD and Yale-New Haven Hospital in CT.
