Chair's Message
by David H. Johnson, MD
Chair, Subspecialty Board on Medical Oncology
Medical oncology continues to evolve as breakthroughs in research lead to innovations and major changes in how we practice. As a past president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and a researcher, I have had a unique opportunity to witness how these innovations are being utilized to achieve the best care possible for the patients we serve. I am constantly reminded just how challenging “staying abreast” of these changes can be for the busy practitioner.
Board certification is the industry benchmark by which physician quality is measured. We must stay current in our knowledge and skills to deliver quality care. Indeed, a growing body of research suggests that physicians’ knowledge and technical skills deteriorate over time. ABIM’s Maintenance of Certification is so vital because it not only measures your clinical judgment through a secure examination but also allows you to assess, evaluate and improve your knowledge and performance in practice and improve the quality of care you provide.
ABIM’s program addresses the unique competencies within each of the subspecialties. Medical oncologists and other subspecialists can select self-evaluation modules that are relevant to their practice and earn points toward the self-evaluation requirement. Because many of you also may want to certify or maintain your certification in hematology, ABIM allows you to apply the same self-evaluation points you earn to the renewal of both certificates. Also, if you are a member of ASCO and are participating in ASCO’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®), you can use your QOPI data report and performance measures to complete ABIM’s Self-Directed PIMsm Practice Improvement Module. Get more information about this opportunity in the Get ABIM Credit for ASCO's Quality Oncology Practice Initiative article in this issue of Perspectives for Medical Oncologists. Find additional information regarding your self-evaluation options on ABIM’s website.
ASCO advocates for the universal participation in Maintenance of Certification by those ASCO members who hold certificates from American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) member boards, including ABIM. I’m finding the process of maintaining my certification rewarding and fulfilling. I encourage you to maintain your certification as well to reflect and uphold the passion and commitment you put into practice every day.
