Medical Knowledge Modules Explain Correct Responses

In response to diplomate requests, ABIM is now adding brief, evidence-based rationales for the correct answers to the multiple-choice questions in the Annual Update modules. While previously there was no feedback provided, now the modules include one-to two-sentence answer explanations, which represent the best current judgment of ABIM and are intended to facilitate diplomates’ self-directed learning. The rationales are included in the online score report received upon completion of the module. Rationales are included with each of the currently available 2007 Annual Updates and will be added to all future Annual Update modules.

Diplomates can simply click on “Show Rationales” located between the “Review Module” and “CME” buttons on the score report. A page will then appear with a brief, evidence-based explanation of the correct answer; if appropriate, feedback may also be included on why a “close call” option is not the best answer to the question.

Please note that the modules and rationales are copyrighted material, and ABIM licenses diplomates to use the rationales only to support their own learning.
