Registration Dates for Fall ’08 Exams

Each fall, ABIM offers initial certification examinations in subspecialties and Maintenance of Certification exams in both internal medicine and subspecialties. Following are key dates if you are planning to take an exam in Fall 2008:

Register Now for Certification Exam in Transplant Hepatology

The Transplant Hepatology Certification Examination is one of many subspecialty exams being offered this fall. Certification in Transplant Hepatology, jointly developed by ABIM and the American Board of Pediatrics, is designed to recognize excellence among gastroenterologists who are specialists in transplant hepatology.

If you are eligible but were not able to take the exam when it was first offered in 2006, you can register now for the
November 19, 2008 examination. The next exam will take place in 2010.

To achieve certification in transplant hepatology, candidates must hold a current ABIM certificate in gastroenterology and fulfill the following requirements:

  • Satisfactory completion of the requisite practice experience or formal training requirements;
  • Substantiation by local authorities of the candidate’s clinical competence, procedural skills, and moral and ethical behavior in the clinical setting;
  • A valid, unrestricted, and unchallenged license to practice medicine; and
  • Successful performance on the Transplant Hepatology Certification Examination.

Please note that 2010 is the final year that the Practice Pathway will be available for admission to the Transplant Hepatology Certification Examination. Beginning in 2011, first-time applicants will need to have completed 12 months of acceptable transplant hepatology fellowship training. Training undertaken July 1, 2011 and thereafter must be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
