American Board of Internal Medicine's Cary S. Sennett, MD, PhD Elected Vice Chair of Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement ®

Philadelphia, PA, October 30, 2006 – Cary S. Sennett, MD, PhD, Senior Vice President for Strategy and Communications at the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), has been elected vice chair of the Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement® (Consortium). The Consortium is an American Medical Association (AMA)-convened organization committed to enhancing quality of care and patient safety by taking the lead in the development, testing, and maintenance of evidence-based clinical performance measures and measurement resources for physicians. Dr. Sennett's three-year term is effective immediately.

Dr. Sennett's election points out how important the certifying boards – like ABIM – are becoming to national measurement and improvement initiatives. It also demonstrates how effectively the certifying boards are working with the medical societies, which represent the largest proportion of Consortium members.

Dr. Sennett has been extensively involved in national efforts to measure and improve performance. At ABIM, he played a central role in connecting professional efforts to marketplace efforts to improve care. As Executive Vice President at the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), he played a leadership role in the development of HEDIS™ and NCQA's Quality Compass™. At the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Sennett led the expansion of national programs to capture and use data about cardiovascular practice to advance professional efforts to improve the quality of cardiovascular care.

The Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement® is comprised of more than 100 national medical specialty and state medical societies; the Council of Medical Specialty Societies; American Board of Medical Specialties and its member boards; experts in methodology and data collection; the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality; and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
