ABIM Elects William J. Bremner, MD, PhD to Board of Directors

Philadelphia, PA, July 1, 2010 – William J. Bremner, MD, PhD, the Robert G. Petersdorf Endowed Chair in Medicine at the Department of Medicine and the Director of the Center for Research in Reproduction and Contraception at the University of Washington in Seattle, has been elected to the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Board of Directors. ABIM sets the standards and certifies physicians practicing in internal medicine and its subspecialties who possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide high quality care.

The Board of Directors, composed of physicians who are board certified in internal medicine or one of its subspecialties, guides ABIM's overall mission and direction as it works to improve health care quality. All ABIM Directors participate in ABIM's Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. MOC recognizes that what was standard treatment a decade ago may have changed, and that the public needs a process to know if their physicians have kept up to date in their field. Dr. Bremner is board certified in internal medicine.

“Bill is an international expert in training programs for the next generation of internists. He has an in-depth understanding of the importance of assessment and the need to modernize the training environment,” said Christine Cassel, MD, ABIM's President and CEO.

Dr. Bremner, an authority on reproductive endocrinology, is a frequent consultant on a range of topics, including residency training, reproductive sciences programs and population research, for medical schools and governmental organizations around the world. He has consulted on programs with the National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization, the United States Olympic Committee, the Medical Research Council of Great Britain, and such schools as Stanford University and the University of Michigan. He is also a frequent lecturer and has served as a visiting professor worldwide, most recently at Johns Hopkins University, where he was the Thayer Lecturer.

Dr. Bremner is a past Chairman of the Western Society for Clinical Investigation and has served as President of the Western Association of Physicians and the Association of Professors of Medicine. He appears in Who's Who in America, and was named a Best Doctor in America and in Seattle. Last year, the American Society of Andrology honored him with the Distinguished Andrologist Award.

Dr. Bremner earned an AB from Harvard University. He completed his medical degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, where he undertook his residency. Following residency, Dr. Bremner served as a senior fellow in endocrinology – a U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Officer – at the same facility. Dr. Bremner also earned a PhD in Physiology and Medicine at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
