Key Dates for the Academic Year
December - March
- December 1 - February 1: Internal Medicine Initial Certification Registration Period
- February 2 - March 1: Late Registration Period
March - June
- March 1 - May 1: Subspecialty Initial Certification Registration Period
- May 2 - June 1: Late Registration Period
August
- ABIM Internal Medicine Certification Examination is administered
- All residents must finish training on or before August 31st in order to take the ABIM Internal Medicine Certification Examination administered earlier in August of the same year
October
- Initial subspecialty examinations are administed in October/November
- All fellows must finish training on or before October 31st in order to take a subspecialty examination in the same year
- All residents and fellows must first become certified in Internal Medicine to be eligible to take a subspecialty examination
- The Internal Medicine and subspecialty examinations may not be taken in the same year
