Withdrawal & Other Important Policies

Withdrawal

If you choose to withdraw from the Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine (FPHM) MOC program, you will automatically be placed into the Internal Medicine MOC program. Any points earned in the FPHM MOC program will be applied to your Internal Medicine MOC requirements, provided they are valid at the time your Internal Medicine certification expires.

If you have earned a FPHM certification and your underlying Internal Medicine certification has lapsed, your status will continue to display “Internal Medicine with a Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine” on the certification verification page on www.abim.org until:

  • Your Internal Medicine certification is reinstated

OR

  • It has been five years from the date you earned your Internal Medicine with a Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine certification
  • Withdrawing from the FPHM program after successfully passing the Hospital Medicine MOC exam will require passing the Internal Medicine MOC exam prior to the lapse of your Internal Medicine MOC certification to remain certified.
  • Diplomates in the FPHM MOC program can sit for the Internal Medicine MOC exam.
  • Only the Hospital Medicine MOC exam satisfies the exam requirement for the FPHM MOC program.
  • Should a diplomate decide to take the Internal Medicine MOC exam while in the FPHM MOC program the Internal Medicine MOC exam and any valid MOC points will be applied to the Internal Medicine certification upon withdrawal from the FPHM program.
