The role of the Board of Directors is to:

  • Determine and advance ABIM's mission and strategic policies, and to ensure the primacy, relevance and value of ABIM Certification
  • Be external-facing and future-focused in setting the direction and strategy for the organization, including setting overall goals and long-range plans for ABIM
  • Establish fiscal policy and provide adequate resources for the activities of the organization
  • Develop and maintain links and relationships to ABIM's constituencies and the community
  • Exercise ultimate fiduciary responsibility and authority

The Board of Directors seeks a non-physician patient or caregiver.

We are looking for the following attributes of a non-physician patient/caregiver member to join the Board of Directors:

  • Prior service in roles representing the public interest sought; prior Board experience (not required but preferable)
  • Knowledge and expertise in areas such as health policy, health information technology, healthcare management, assessment or quality improvement science, and/or business and finance
  • Ability to interact and collaborate with physicians and individuals from a variety of health care-related backgrounds
  • Insight reflecting a firm understanding and support for ABIM's mission

The Board of Directors also seeks internists or subspecialists with experience leading large institutional change and/or expertise in fields related to digital health care.

The Board prioritizes highly qualified candidates who have one or several of the following characteristics: certified after 1990; non-academic practice; practices in rural or urban underserved communities; Latino/Hispanic and other under-represented minorities; and women.

Requirements for ABIM Service

  • Commitment to ABIM's mission “to enhance the quality of health care by certifying internists and subspecialists who demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for excellent patient care.”
  • Genuine interest in professional development and standard-setting for internal medicine and its subspecialties.
  • For physician directors, willingness to comply with the MOC Participation Policy for Physicians Serving ABIM, which includes a requirement that diplomates certified before 1990 who have never passed an MOC exam must take and pass an MOC exam within the first three years of ABIM service. (The assessment requirement will be updated to include participation in the Longitudinal Assessment Pathway when it is launched in 2022.)
  • Willingness to comply with ABIM's Financial and Academic conflict of interest policies, which require relationship disclosures be updated at least annually, and prohibit participation in “board review” or "board prep" courses throughout and two years after ABIM service.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills, as well as ability to meet deadlines and complete task assignments.
  • For in-person meetings, ABIM arranges and pays for lodging, and reimburses members for meals and travel that fall within the ABIM financial guidelines.

Time Commitment

Typically, the Board of Directors meets in-person five times a year. Three meetings (October, April and June) are held in ABIM's Philadelphia office; two meetings (February and August) take place in different U.S. locations, including western states. Additional meetings are held via webinar, as needed. All Directors are assigned to serve on at least one of the Board’s five standing committees, which each have their own tasks and meetings. Directors serve an initial three-year term, renewable twice for a total of nine years eligibility, pending satisfactory performance.
