The role of the exam committee is to:
- Develop items for the Certification and MOC exams
- Propose the exam blueprint for the specialty board's approval
- Upon approval, implement the blueprint
- Confirm that exams constructed according to blueprint specifications are valid
- Maintain the exam item pool within the blueprint framework as defined by ABIM
- Review content developed by the item-writing task force
- Work with ABIM staff to accomplish goals

The American Board of Internal Medicine is seeking a new member for the ABIM Hematology Board Exam Committee. In particular, we are seeking candidates with significant clinical expertise and experience in hematopoietic cell transplantation, cellular therapy and myeloid malignancies. We are seeking candidates with at least five years of clinical experience after initial certification. ABIM’s exam committees create assessments for specialty Certification and Maintenance of Certification. In doing so, they play a crucial role in helping us all define the scope of our specialties.
The exam committee selection process will consider each candidate’s clinical expertise, career accomplishments, and experience with professional assessments. Demographic and regional factors will be considered in support of the committee's intent to reflect the clinical community and ensure a relevant, high-quality assessment.
We are especially interested in candidates who spend at least 50% of their professional time in direct patient care. We also welcome those who divide their professional time across patient care, teaching, research, and administrative activities.
Requirements for ABIM Service
- Commitment to ABIM's mission “to enhance the quality of health care by certifying internists and subspecialists who demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for excellent patient care.”
- Genuine interest in professional development and standard-setting for internal medicine and its subspecialties.
- Willingness to comply with the MOC Participation Policy for Physicians Serving ABIM, if applicable, which includes a requirement that diplomates certified before 1990 who have never passed an MOC exam must take and pass an MOC exam within the first three years of ABIM service.
- Willingness to comply with ABIM's Financial and Academic conflict of interest policies, which require relationship disclosures be updated at least annually, and prohibit participation in “board review” or "board prep" courses throughout and two years after ABIM service.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills, as well as ability to meet deadlines and complete task assignments.
- For in-person meetings, ABIM arranges and pays for lodging, and reimburses members for meals and travel that fall within the ABIM financial guidelines.
Exam committees typically meet in person once or twice a year for two-day or three-day meetings, at least one of which is held at the ABIM offices in Philadelphia; a second meeting may be held at a Midwest or West Coast venue. Some committee work will be done via webinar several times a year, as needed. Exam committee members serve an initial two-year term, which may be renewed annually for up to four additional years of service, pending satisfactory performance.
