Role

The co-sponsoring boards of the Hospice and Palliative Medicine certificate are creating a model for co-sponsored discipline governance called Advisory Committees. These new Advisory Committees are similar to Specialty Boards in scope, with representation from each co-sponsoring ABMS Member Board. Advisory Committees are responsible for the broad definition of the discipline across Certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) and ensuring Certification and MOC are relevant and meaningful vehicles in their discipline. Advisory Committees have oversight over assessment committees.

The role of the Advisory Committee is to:

  • Define, refine and set standards in Certification and MOC in the discipline.
  • Perform oversight/review of performance assessments in the discipline.
  • Build partnerships with societies and other organizational stakeholders in support of the discipline and the work of the co-sponsoring boards.

Expertise/Qualifications

The Hospice and Palliative Medicine Advisory Committee seeks a hospice and palliative medicine physician.

All Advisory Committee members are expected to have:

  • Strong communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated abilities relevant to their discipline and integrity that is recognized by their community.

We are looking for physicians who:

  • Have meaningful, current clinical practice experience.
  • Are currently ABIM Board Certified in their discipline.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to develop a deep understanding of certification and Maintenance of Certification programs in the discipline and the activities that support them.

Requirements for ABIM Service

  • Commitment to ABIM's mission “to enhance the quality of health care by certifying internists and subspecialists who demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for excellent patient care.”
  • Genuine interest in professional development and standard-setting for internal medicine and its subspecialties.
  • Willingness to comply with the MOC Participation Policy for Physicians Serving ABIM, if applicable, which includes a requirement that diplomates certified before 1990 who have never passed an MOC exam must take and pass an MOC exam within the first three years of ABIM service.
  • Willingness to comply with ABIM's Financial and Academic conflict of interest policies, which require relationship disclosures be updated at least annually, and prohibit participation in "board review" or "board prep" courses throughout and two years after ABIM service.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills, as well as ability to meet deadlines and complete task assignments.

Time Commitment

Advisory Committees typically have two one-day meetings per year in Philadelphia, as well as several webinar meetings throughout the year as needed. Advisory Committee members generally serve an initial three-year term, renewable once up to six years of total service, pending satisfactory performance.
