Our Commitment to Health Equity

Creating an inclusive environment that provides equal access to quality care for all.

A patient’s perspective: The evolving landscape of IBD

"IBD patients are not just "stories" but rather should be partners in care and a vital part of the evolving landscape of IBD."

ABIM’S Commitment to Health Equity

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) has made a commitment to explore disparities in health care through our Board’s policies and programs. We affirm our ongoing commitment to advancing health equity in furtherance of ABIM’s mission.

ABIM’s health equity strategy has broadened to bring as many voices to the table as possible. Our goal is to ensure that our programs and policies are not divorced from the lived experiences of our diplomates and the communities they serve.

This page serves as a record of what we have committed to, an overview of what we have done thus far to fulfill those commitments, and as a fulfillment of the promise to remain transparent and accountable to our community as we do this ongoing work.

ABIM as a Workplace

In September 2020, ABIM named its first ever Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer (CEIO) to lead efforts to advance ABIM’s commitment to be an equitable and inclusive organization.

Lorna Lynn, MD, Vice President for Medical Education Research at ABIM, is the interim CEIO. Dr. Lynn is responsible for implementing an overarching vision of equity and inclusion for ABIM and ABIM Foundation, guided by the Equity Committee of the Board of Directors.
