Neil R. Powe, MD, MPH, MBA, Elected to the American Board of Internal Medicine Board of Directors

Philadelphia, PA, July 1, 2008 – Neil R. Powe, MD, MPH, MBA, Director of the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research, and University Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, has been elected to the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Board of Directors. ABIM sets the standards and certifies physicians practicing in internal medicine and its subspecialties who possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide high quality care.

The Board of Directors, composed of physicians board certified in internal medicine and one of its subspecialties, guides ABIM's overall mission and direction as it works to improve health care quality. All ABIM Directors participate in ABIM's Maintenance of Certification program, which promotes ongoing learning and in which doctors demonstrate their commitment to the Board's standards.

"Neil is a highly respected health care researcher who has influenced national policy on how physicians care for their patients, and I know his expertise will make important contributions to the work of ABIM," said Christine K. Cassel, MD, ABIM's President and CEO.

An internist and epidemiologist, Dr. Powe is an expert in the treatment of chronic kidney disease. Among his accomplishments are changes to practice guidelines for treating patients with end-stage renal disease, preventing the misuse of treatments, such as recombinant erythropoietin, and examining the effectiveness of various technologies, including peritoneal or hemodialysis.

"I'm honored to be on the Board of an organization that shares my commitment and dedication to improving health care quality," said Dr. Powe.

Dr. Powe has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed publications, served as the principal investigator or co-investigator on many federally funded health research studies, and been a member of numerous national scientific advisory bodies. He was named the 2007 Distinguished Educator by the National Association of Clinical Research Training. He is a member of many professional organizations, including the Association of Chiefs of General Internal Medicine, American Society for Clinical Investigation and Association of American Physicians and the Institute of Medicine

Dr. Powe received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He is board certified in internal medicine.
