ABIM Announces Members of its Subspecialty Board on Nephrology

Philadelphia, PA, July 1, 2008 – The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) today announced the membership of its Subspecialty Board on Nephrology, one of 11 ABIM Subspecialty Boards that encompass the field of internal medicine. ABIM has issued more than 8,000 certificates in Nephrology.

ABIM's subspecialty boards are composed of experts in both academic medicine and practice, all of whom must be ABIM certified in the particular subspecialty. Members of these boards apply their individual and collective knowledge toward the development of the policies, standards and requirements for Certification and Maintenance of Certification in their subspecialty, with special focus on developing the cognitive exam that physicians must take to certify or maintain their certification. Diagnostic reasoning and judgment are the hallmarks of the internal medicine physician and these exams present clinical scenarios like those encountered in the practice of nephrology.

“The experience and skills this group of nephrology professionals brings to ABIM are impressive, and their expertise will be extremely valuable as it works to determine the requirements and qualifications of candidates applying for certification in this important subspecialty,” said Dr. Stuart Linas, Chair of the Subspecialty Board on Nephrology.

Members of the Subspecialty Board on Nephrology include:

  • Sharon G. Adler, MD – Harbor-UCLA Medical Center
  • Arnold S. Berns, MD – Lakeside Nephrology, Ltd., Chicago
  • David A. Bushinsky, MD – University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry
  • Thomas M. Coffman, MD – Duke University Medical Center
  • Connie L. Davis, MD – University of Washington Medical Center
  • David H. Ellison, MD – Oregon Health & Sciences University
  • Talat Ikizler, MD – Vanderbilt University School of Medicine
  • Stuart L. Linas, MD (Chair) – Denver Health Medical Center
  • Mark Anthony Perazella, MD – Yale University School of Medicine
