Internal Medicine / Emergency Medicine / Critical Care Medicine Policy Overview

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) offer triple certification for candidates who complete a six-year (72-month) integrated, coherent program of combined training in internal medicine, emergency medicine and critical care medicine approved by both Boards.

Upon successful completion and verification of the first five years of this program, candidates may apply to take the certification examinations in internal medicine and emergency medicine. To meet eligibility for certification in critical care medicine, the candidate must:

  • Have satisfactorily completed the six-year combined program
  • Be certified by ABIM
  • Have met the certification requirements of ABEM
