American Board of Internal Medicine home page

Initial Certification indicates that physicians have met rigorous standards through intensive study, accredited training and evaluation and that they have the clinical judgment, skills and attitudes essential for the delivery of excellent patient care.

MOC is a professionally determined standard that attests that an internist is staying current in knowledge and practice throughout his/her career.

For more than 75 years, Certification by ABIM has stood for the highest standard in internal medicine and its 20 subspecialties.

Approved Activities

The ABIM Approved Quality Improvement (AQI) Program is the process through which ABIM recognizes externally developed quality improvement and safety activities. The AQI Program allows ABIM Board Certified physicians to earn Practice Assessment MOC points and Patient Safety MOC credit for activities they are already doing.

Important Reminders:

  • Contact the sponsoring organization directly for more information about the activity.
  • The sponsoring organization may charge additional fees separate from ABIM's MOC fee.
  • Eligibility to participate in a specific activity may be restricted by your professional affiliation or location.
  • For external quality improvement/performance improvement activities that were completed in the prior calendar year, ABIM will accept retroactive MOC credit through March 31. No other retroactive MOC credit will be accepted.
