Practice Performance Options
To make it possible for all internists and subspecialists to complete the Self-Evaluation of Practice Performance requirement, ABIM provides a number of options, all of which include information on how to develop and implement a relevant improvement plan and report the results of changes made to ABIM.
- Chronic Condition PIMs
- Subspecialty Condition PIMs
- Prevention PIMs
- Care of the Vulnerable Elderly PIM
- Hospital-Based Patient Care PIM
- Communication Modules
- Self-Directed PIM
- Option for Clinically Inactive Physicians
Chronic Condition PIMs
The Asthma, Diabetes and Hypertension PIMs include:
- Patient surveys that allow the physician to hear the patient's voice
- Chart reviews that focus on key outcomes and processes of care
- A practice systems survey that identifies both the human processes and information technology that can improve the quality of care
- Developing, implementing and reporting on an improvement plan
Note: The data collected for the Diabetes PIM may be transmitted to the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for Physician Recognition in Diabetes and possible pay-for-performance rewards.

Hospital-Based Patient Care PIM
The Hospital-Based Patient Care PIM includes:
- Performance Data entry used to examine hospital-level performance for the selected condition
- Acute MI
- Community-Acquired Pneumonia
- Heart Failure
- Prevention of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia
- An examination of the current work process, barriers to ideal care, and change ideas relevant to improving the selected performance measure
- A practice systems survey that examines the hospital’s quality environment and information management systems
- Developing, implementing and reporting on an improvement plan

Self-Directed PIM
The Self-Directed PIM includes:
- Performance Data entry used to examine performance as measured by data provided from approved sources (see Approved Sources for Performance Data and Measures) or independently collected by the practice using measures derived from evidence-based, nationally-recognized guidelines
- A practice systems survey that identifies both the human processes and information technology that can improve the quality of care
- Developing, implementing and reporting on an improvement plan
- Self-Directed Requirements l Demonstration

Option for Clinically Inactive Physicians
Physicians who have no patients or no access to patient data, either directly or indirectly, can complete the Essentials of Quality Improvement (EQI) module. This module allows physicians to assess their knowledge of current quality improvement principles and practices and to apply that knowledge to their current work situation.
This module includes:
- Six interactive learning modules on the topic of current quality improvement principles and methods
- Developing, implementing and reporting on an improvement plan appropriate for the physician's current responsibilities
- Essentials of Quality Improvement Requirements
