Expertise/Qualifications

The Board of Directors seeks practicing physicians who are ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine or one of its subspecialties.

Applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Because ABIM strives to have representation from a cross-section of the profession bringing a broad range of perspectives, ABIM particularly welcomes applications from those with the experiences listed below. We do not expect individual candidates to hold all of these qualities; applicants who bring strength in any area should apply:

  • Experience in rural medicine
  • Leaders in academic medicine
  • Physicians who are clinically active

The following leadership skills are also valuable to this role:

  • Prior experience with service on a nonprofit Board of Directors (not required but preferable)

Requirements for ABIM Service

  • Commitment to ABIM’s mission “to enhance the quality of health care by certifying internists and subspecialists who demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for excellent patient care.”
  • Genuine interest in professional development and standard-setting for internal medicine and its subspecialties.
  • Compliance with the MOC Participation Policy for Physicians Serving ABIM, if applicable.
  • Compliance with ABIM's Financial and Academic conflict of interest policies, which require relationship disclosures be updated at least annually, and prohibit participation in "board review" or "board prep" courses throughout ABIM service.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills, as well as ability to meet deadlines and complete task assignments.

Time Commitment

The ABIM Board of Directors typically holds three two-day meetings per year in Philadelphia, two multiple-day meetings per year in person in other locations, as well as several webinar meetings throughout the year as needed.  Directors are also required to serve on committees of the Board, which hold additional meetings in conjunction with in-person Board meetings or via webinar throughout the year.  Directors generally serve an initial three-year term, renewable twice up to nine years of total service, pending satisfactory performance.
