Overview

The American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Family Medicine offer dual certification for candidates who have satisfactorily completed four years of combined training in programs approved by both Boards. To be eligible for dual certification, combined residency training in internal medicine and family medicine must include at least 48 months of balanced education in the two disciplines and be verified by the training director(s) of the program. The written certifying examinations cannot be taken until all required years in both specialties are completed.
