J-1 Visa

ABIM has changed its policy regarding support of trainees seeking J-1 Visa sponsorship through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduate (ECFMG) for participation in "non-standard" training programs.

There are two types of "nonstandard" training programs. The first type pertains to medical disciplines that are either too new or narrow to be ACGME-accredited on their own (e.g., pituitary disease, heart failure, renal genetics, etc.). The second type of nonstandard training is related to training that exceeds the minimum time required for ABIM Board Certification (e.g., fourth year of training in cardiovascular disease).

ABIM no longer sends information about specific candidates or programs to ECFMG regarding requests for support of J-1 Visa sponsorship. To ease the J-1 Visa process for non standard training, ABIM has developed a list of disciplines that are recognized within internal medicine as legitimate fields of study. If you are requesting a sponsorship for nonstandard training in one of these disciplines, or for a chief residency year, please contact the ECFMG directly or visit their website at www.ecfmg.org.

ABIM and ECFMG have collaborated to facilitate requests for these disciplines. If your request is a discipline that does not appear on this list or you need additional information from ABIM, e-mail request@abim.org.
