Back

Cassel will chair ABIM’s Senior Executive Team and will monitor and coordinate ABIM activities, including the implementation of a new two-year assessment option.

Philadelphia, January 24, 2017 — The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) announced today that Judith (Judi) Cassel, MPP, has joined the organization as Chief of Staff and will chair the Senior Executive Team. She will report to and be a key representative for ABIM President and Chief Executive Officer Richard J. Baron, MD.

Cassel will oversee ABIM's Human Resources department and lead engagement with ABIM's nearly 350 governance members, helping to develop and implement ABIM's programmatic goals. Additionally, she will serve as ABIM's Chief Ethics Officer, ensuring adherence to ABIM's conflict of interest policies for governance members and staff.

“I am delighted to welcome Judi to the ABIM team. She has made an impact in Philadelphia, ABIM's local community, with her enthusiasm, strategic oversight and ability to develop innovative solutions,” said Dr. Baron, who practiced in his Philadelphia community for 30 years. “In her new role, Judi will monitor and coordinate ABIM activities. She will make important contributions to ongoing projects which impact physicians across the country, including the implementation of a new every-two-year assessment option for internists and subspecialists who are maintaining board certification.”

Cassel has more than 15 years of senior executive experience in the public sector. Most recently, she worked for the City of Philadelphia as Project Director for OnePhilly, a transformation of human resources operations that serve more than 60,000 active and retired employees. She helped lead Philadelphia's financial operations as Chief of Staff to the Finance Director. As Chief of Staff of the Department of Human Services and as a Deputy Managing Director, she provided strategic direction to the City's 54 operating departments and managed relationships with a diverse range of organizations.

Earlier in her career, Cassel was Deputy Chief Strategic Planning Officer for the School District of Philadelphia and worked in the Philadelphia Department of Human Services, where she instituted consumer and community feedback processes. She earned a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and a master's degree in Public Policy from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. She also completed a fellowship at the Education Policy & Leadership Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

“ABIM is in the midst of important changes, and I am excited to join the organization as it works to expand outreach to practicing physicians and engage them in developing new approaches to lifelong learning and assessment,” Cassel said. “I look forward to working with ABIM’s dedicated staff and governance members to find ways to support physicians in achieving high standards and providing the best care possible to patients.”
