Role

The role of the ABIM Council is to:

  • Determine requirements for Certification and Maintenance of Certification across internal medicine;
  • harmonize ABIM standards with those of other recognized physician education and assessment initiatives
  • set and integrate operational policies and procedures across the Specialty Boards; and
  • evaluate proposals for new specialties/focused practice areas.

Expertise/Qualifications

The ABIM Council seeks an At-Large Public Member that is an interprofessional health care team member (e.g. RN, APRN, PA, NP, PharmD, licensed social worker, etc.) who has experience working with internal medicine physicians.

The ABIM Council is a cross-disciplinary policy-making group with responsibility for oversight of ABIM program rules and discipline-specific governance. The Council advises ABIM’s Board of Directors on important strategic matters. All Councilors are expected to:

  • Maintain specialized knowledge of ABIM and Certification and MOC programs and proactively disseminate information about these programs to the internal medicine community
  • Keep up to date with issues/trends affecting the profession, patient care, and the ABIM credential

Special Consideration will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Prior service in roles representing the public interest sought; prior Board experience a plus
  • Knowledge and expertise which supplements that already represented on the Council.
  • Ability to interact and collaborate with physicians and individuals from a variety of health care-related backgrounds
  • Insight reflecting a firm understanding and support for ABIM's mission
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and newer communication technologies

ABIM Council has a unique set of competencies that they consider when maintaining the balance of membership composition so that ABIM governance as a whole represents the physicians ABIM certifies and the patients for whom they care. Leadership competencies, practice settings, clinical involvement and content expertise are a few of the areas considered when deciding which nominated candidates to appoint to membership, therefore the Council can nominate to the needs they see as a best fit.

Requirements for ABIM Service

  • Commitment to ABIM's mission "to enhance the quality of health care by certifying internists and subspecialists who demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for excellent patient care."
  • Genuine interest in professional development and standard-setting for internal medicine and its subspecialties.
  • Willingness to comply with the MOC Participation Policy for Physicians Serving ABIM which includes a requirement that diplomates certified before 1990 who have never passed an MOC exam must take and pass an MOC exam within the first three years of ABIM service.
  • Willingness to comply with ABIM's Financial and Academic conflict of interest policies, which require relationship disclosures be updated at least annually, and prohibit participation in "board review" or "board prep" courses throughout ABIM service.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills, as well as ability to meet deadlines and complete task assignments.

Time Commitment

ABIM Councilors typically have three two-day meetings in Philadelphia each year, as well as at least two webinar meetings. Councilors generally serve an initial three-year term, renewable once for a total of six years of service, pending satisfactory performance.

  • Letter of Support from a colleague who knows you and your work well, but can not be someone who is part of the decision making process.
  • Reference Contact Information – ABIM contacts references for insight into candidates' personal characteristics and collaboration style.
  • Personal Statement – Approximately 300 words describing your perspective of the ABIM mission and your role in it.
