“Hundreds of physicians, care team members and patients devote their time and expertise to advancing ABIM’s mission as ABIM governance,” said Furman S. McDonald, MD, MPH, President and CEO of ABIM and the ABIM Foundation. “They bring much needed perspective and guidance, ensuring that ABIM Board Certification remains meaningful, relevant and valuable to physicians and the public alike. They are the embodiment of our aspiration to be ‘of the profession, and for the public®.’”
Nearly 6,000 physicians help advance ABIM’s mission through involvement in governance, Item-Writing Task Forces, the Community Insights Network, standard-setting committees, fairness review and other ad hoc committees. In addition, public members representing the voices of patients and patient advocates, caregivers and interprofessional healthcare team members serve on the Board of Directors, Council, Specialty Boards and Advisory Committees.
About the American Board of Internal Medicine
Since its founding in 1936, certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) has stood for the highest standard in internal medicine and its 20 subspecialties. Nearly 300,000 physicians are certified by ABIM, representing more than a quarter of all doctors in the United States. Patients whose doctors demonstrate more medical knowledge and judgment through ABIM certification and Maintenance of Certification have better prognoses on a host of outcomes.
