Gastroenterology Board

The Specialty Boards and Advisory Committees aim to maintain a composition that reflects the diversity and complexity of the physician and patient populations that certification serves. They include both practicing physician members and public members representing interdisciplinary healthcare professionals, patients and caregivers.

Dr. DeVault is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine, and a member of the Executive Operating Team at the Mayo Clinic Florida. He is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

Prior to becoming Chair of Medicine, Dr. DeVault was Chair of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Mayo Clinic Florida. Dr. DeVault is a fellow and past president of the American College of Gastroenterology. He is also a member of the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and a fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. DeVault conducts research on disorders affecting all aspects of the esophagus and has written more than 250 book chapters, abstracts, editorials and original articles on subjects ranging from the treatment of GERD, dysphagia, esophagitis and Barrett's esophagus to laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery and managed care issues in the treatment of GERD. He also has an interest in gastrointestinal health developing nations, improving professionalism in both trainees and practicing physicians and in the development of a diverse and effective healthcare work force.

He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee and his medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Vanderbilt University and completed a combined clinical and research fellowship at Jefferson Medical College

Dr. Bhavsar-Burke is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a member of the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases. She is ABIM Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology. Her professional appointments include Associate Program Director for both the internal medicine residency and the gastroenterology fellowship programs. She also serves as Co-Director for IMPACT, UT Southwestern's longitudinal faculty development program for clinician educators.  

Dr. Bhavsar-Burke specializes in general and transplant hepatology. She is actively involved in medical education, faculty development, assessment and coaching in graduate medical education. Her clinical and research interests include acute-on-chronic liver failure.  

Dr. Bhavsar-Burke attended medical school at Marshall University in West Virginia. She then completed internal medicine residency at the University of Virginia. She finished her gastroenterology fellowship at Indiana University, followed by transplant hepatology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. She also earned a master's degree in health professions education from the University of Michigan. She joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2023.

Ms. Castrillon has more than 20 years of experience in advertising, branding and integrated marketing. As a multilingual strategic marketing professional, she is committed to attaining business goals, driving sales growth and effectively communicating brand and value propositions. Fluent in Spanish and French, she has a strong focus on diversity, both personally and professionally.

As a Crohn’s disease patient since 2003, Ms. Castrillon has a strong interest in gastroenterology. Since her diagnosis, she has been involved with Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation in various capacities, including as a fundraiser, advocate, mentor, stakeholder reviewer, associate editor and task force member within the Foundation. She believes in the power of the patient voice and openly shares her personal experience of living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In 2024, she was inducted to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s National Board of Trustees. As a Latina IBD patient of Peruvian descent, she is committed to addressing the unique needs of diverse IBD communities and expanding patient accessibility to quality IBD information, resources and research. Her commitment to inclusivity extends to her advocacy efforts on social media, where she ensures her advocacy resonates with the Hispanic/Latino IBD population. She shares her advocacy work through her social media handle, @VoiceForIBD.

Ms. Castrillon holds a Bachelor of Business Administration, with an emphasis in marketing and international business, and minors in French and Spanish from the University of San Diego. She furthered her education by obtaining a Master of Business Administration in global business from Pepperdine University.

Dr. Kohli is an interventional endoscopist working at Providence Digestive Health Institute in Spokane, Washington. Prior to his current position, he served as the Director of Endoscopy at the Kansas City VA Medical Center in Missouri and as adjunct faculty for the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Program at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

Dr. Kohli has served in multiple volunteer roles with ABIM, including as a member of a standard-setting panel, member and pod leader of the Gastroenterology Item-Writing Task Force, and member of the Gastroenterology Traditional, 10-Year Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Exam Approval Committee. Dr. Kohli also serves on the Standards of Practice Committee at the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy where he is involved in developing guidelines and best practices for clinicians. He has been recognized for his outstanding public service and professionalism by the Veterans Health Administration and is a recipient of the Saul Zuckerman Humanitarianism in Medicine Award for outstanding scholarship and compassion. He has authored over 60 research papers and has received multiple awards for his leading-edge clinical research.

Dr. Kohli received his medical degree from Government Medical College & Hospital, Chandigarh, in India, and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. He then completed fellowships in gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he also served as Chief Fellow. He then went on to complete an advanced endoscopy fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona.

Headshot of Joy M. McGough, RN, MD

Joy McGough is a professional nurse with a Doctor of Medicine degree and more than 30 years of experience in clinical, administrative, compliance and education areas. Currently, she is the lead clinical coordinator for the Center for Liver Care at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She is actively involved in onboarding training of nurse coordinators at UPMC’s Hepatology and Organ Transplantation program. 

Ms. McGough attended nursing school at the University of the Philippines in Manila and completed medical school at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center in the Philippines. She trained in anesthesiology at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City, Philippines. She has vast experience in various fields of nursing including intensive cardiac and coronary care, physical medicine and rehabilitation, stroke management, home care, gastroenterology, hepatology and liver transplantation.

Having had experiences both as a doctor of medicine and a professional nurse, Ms. McGough’s passion is looking into and understanding the interprofessional aspects of medical care and identifying gaps in the operational processes and healthcare protocols in her department, with a goal to improve their effectiveness and efficiency in line with the fast-changing technological advancements, methods and processes in the field of medicine.

Dr. Reeves is a general gastroenterologist and consultant for GI Alliance in Flowood, Mississippi. Prior to her current position, she served as faculty at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. She is ABIM Board Certified in Gastroenterology.

She serves as trustee for the board of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG). She is also a member of the ACG Awards Committee and the DEI Committee, and is board liaison for the Practice Professionalism Committees.

Her main clinical interests are motility disorders and colon cancer prevention. She has significant experience in global medical missions in Honduras and the continent of Africa.
Dr. Reeves received her bachelor's degree from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, and obtained her medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville. She furthered her education in 2017 by completing a Master of Business Administration at Millsaps College. Her residency and fellowship were completed at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, where she continues as faculty and director of the motility lab, conducting both clinical and bench research. She has both private practice and private equity experience.
